Anxiety Disorders Program

Anxiety disorders affect more Americans than any other single type of mental illness. Close to 25 million people experience anxiety in one form or another, such as panic disorder, social phobia, agoraphobia, posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, at some time in their lives.

The Life Adjustment Team has developed a unique program with special emphasis on teaching the skills necessary to minimize the impact these anxiety disorders have on daily living. Clients participating in this program have seen measurable improvement in their ability to focus and progress in other areas of their rehabilitation with the Team.

This program is now open to people who are not clients of The Life Adjustment Team, and can be a supportive adjunct to working in private therapy.

Julie Austin, Ph.D., a specialist in the treatment of anxiety disorders, works directly with each person involved in the program. Dr. Austin received her Doctorate in Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology in 1994. She then worked as the Project Director for a UCLA research project, funded by the National Institute of Health. She is also a Clinical Supervisor for The Life Adjustment Team, and maintains a private practice in Santa Monica, California.

Dr. Austin offers both individual and group training in the management of anxiety. When working with individuals, issues are sometimes best addressed in the environment where people are having difficulty functioning. In keeping with the philosophy of LAT, Dr. Austin and her staff practice in vivo skills training - going out into the community with clients, when appropriate, to work on anxieties that occur in specific situations.

The group training is designed to teach coping strategies and develop tools and techniques that have been proven to be effective in managing anxiety disorders. These groups address a different area each week, and the group repeats every six weeks. This approach allows participants to continuously build and strengthen their skills. Additionally, new clients may join the group at any time.
